Purpose of this Position:

Working in concert with corrections designated staff, Jail Medical Director and the Public Health Administrator, this position will perform and provide basic medical services to the inmate population. The Corrections Nurse will perform assessments and assist medical provider with procedures and prescribed medical treatments, screen patients and assist in presenting their health concerns/issues to provider, provide medical in-service training for corrections staff, manage medical records as well as medical supplies inventory, oversee corrections staff in proper medication administration procedures, as well as perform training of corrections staff related to medical care and needs of the inmate population.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: This position will work under the general supervision of the Public Health Administrator with oversight from the Jail Medical Director who periodically reviews work for adherence to the appropriate policies and for results obtained.


1.    Must hold RN or LPN license in state of primary workplace and be licensed in the other state (Idaho/Oregon) within 90 days of hire date. Oregon and Idaho licensures must be maintained at all times.

2.    Must hold current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (healthcare provider).

3.    Must hold current AHA ACLS Certification or obtain within 6 months of hire and maintain at all times.

4.    Sensitive to needs of inmate population.

5.    Previous experience serving in corrections environment preferred.

6.    Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.


1.    Perform, review and follow up on inmate intake medical screenings.

2.    Participate in dispensing and maintaining inventory of inmate medications. Complete order form regarding medications for specific inmates and communicate instructions both in writing and verbally to staff. Ensure adherence to legal controls on all controlled substances.

3.    Maintain documentation relative to patient incident, treatment, and care. Review all medical error reports.

4.    Perform lab tests, EKG’s, vision and hearing screenings, and administer wound care, medications, injections or immunizations as requested by medical providers and according to established protocols.

5.    Assist provider with examinations and procedures as needed.

6.    May screen patients and assist in presenting their health concerns/issues to medical providers.

7.    Provide patient counseling and health education as ordered by medical providers or by protocol.

8.    Maintain a safe, private, clean, neat and comfortable care environment.

9.    Make referral appointments.

10.  Maintain strict confidence of all information gained in the performance of duties per HIPPA standards.

11.  Maintain appropriate levels of current date medical supplies and medications.

12.  Perform and record quality control procedures as required.

13.  Clean and sterilize instruments.

14.  Adhere to all applicable policies and procedures.

15.  Provide in-service training to corrections line staff on new or existing medical policies as well as training related to current and emerging medical issues within the facility.

16.  Review and update training material.

17.  Attend scheduled staff meetings with facility commander and contracted health providers.

18.  Assist with meeting quality measures by completing tasks related to VFHC initiatives.

19.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Patient Centered Care:

1.    Facilitate health and disease patient education.

2.    Support patient self-management of disease and behavior modification interventions.

3.    Conduct preventive screenings for patients.

4.    Promote clear communication among the care team by ensuring awareness regarding patient care plans.

5.    Facilitate patient medication management based upon standing orders and protocols.

6.    Participate on a team for data collection and health outcomes reporting related to patient centered care.


Physical Requirements:


Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
Continuous sitting, standing, walking.
Correctable vision and hearing.
4.    The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
